You will find the Breed Description of the Kerry Blue Terrier in the AKC "The Complete
Dog Book", or many different web sites including the United States Kerry
Blue Terrier club web site. USKBTC.com Things to keep in mind when looking to purchase a Kerry are: Get all the equipment you need before bringing your puppy home. Be sure that the sire and dam have good temperaments. The sire and dam have been OFA certified clear of hip dysplasia. If you can no longer keep your Kerry for any reason, return the dog to the breeder! If buying a pet quality dog, get them spayed or neutered AFTER they have turned 1year old. Never give your Kerry a Leptovirus Vaccine, NEVER! Kerries do have bad reactions to this vaccine. Go by what your breeder says for the vaccine schedule. DO NOT OVER VACCINATE! Listen and take your breeders advice on vaccinations, de wormings and flea and tick treatments. When finding a good trainer, be sure they like Kerries. If they don't or if they wont work with you then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Find a good groomer to go to. And be sure that they know how to groom the Kerry to look like a Kerry. Have your Kerry groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. I have taught many owners how to groom their own Kerries and they do a great job! Feed a good diet. Do research to find the best foods that you can. Remember every dog is different, so different foods will work better for different dogs. Purchase your Kerry from a good breeder. A good breeder is one that is showing their dogs. Whether it be in Confirmation, obedience or agility. Good breeders know what is in their dogs background, will know the temperaments and health behind their dogs. They are the people that will be glad to work with you. Do NOT by from a pet shop or a puppy miller! They are abundant out there and they are the worst places you could buy a dog. The less that the public buys from these places the better and some day they can be shut down. There are a lot of websites, stories and pictures of what puppy millers do and how they "raise" their dogs. Be aware! Kerries are not the breed for everyone. Temperament problems can arrise if you don't work with your dog. Kerries can be very dog aggressive so be sure to socialize your new pup at every chance. Go to training classes on a regular basis. If you think you are done socializing your pup with other puppies and dogs, your NOT! Kerries should be socialized on a regular bases. Go to obedience classes or agility. Brush your Kerry every night to at least once a week. I lie mine down in my lap, belly up, and brush them while I watch tv. This is a great time, very relaxing for both you and your dog. Kerries are very sensitive and love their people. They are easy to train and will be your shadow for the rest of their lives. I've seen some Kerries that lived to be 17 and 18 years old. The average lifespan is around 10 to 14 years old . All dogs are sold with a contract, bill of sale, vaccination, de worming records, health certificate, pedigree and the AKC registration form. All pets are sold on a Limited AKC form. Puppies being sold as show quality will be sold with full registration papers. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Kerry On! |
